La conservación de cualquier fotografía es un reto constante, debido a los diferentes procesos que se han impuesto desde su invención en 1839. cada fotografía presenta diversas variables, asociadas a la materialidad de los objetos. por lo tanto, la comprensión de cada técnica, permite definir las acciones de conservación sobre los diferentes tipos de documentos fotográficos.

Es uno de los cuatro archivos más importantes del continente en cuanto al patrimonio fotográfico de carácter histórico y el mayor archivo fotográfico de negativos de América Latina.
